Impact Font is a sans-serif typeface designed by Microsoft Corporation. It was created in the late 19s and was released by American Type Founders, a company that has since been bought out and is now known as ATF.
The font was originally designed for use with IBM Selectric typewriters, which were released in 1951. Selectric typewriters used a different kind of typeball than traditional typewriters, which meant that the font had to be redesigned to accommodate this change. The new design had to be more robust and have thicker strokes so that they could be better read on these new devices.
